There are many embarrassing health problems around which are difficult to discuss even with your doctors. A further problem is keeping quiet about them and can affect your overall health. However, most of these problems can be remedied or well managed.
Let us examine some of these health problems and what can be done about them before seeing your doctor. Do not suffer in silence, solutions are available.
1. Body Odour
Body odour is a very common embarrassing health problem that can be caused by obesity, eating very spicy foods, your genetics and not by bathing regularly with soap.
Self help treatment: It can be managed by bathing regularly to remove natural bacteria from the skin. For those who are fat or obesed, you wash and towel-dry all your skin folds and under breast if you have large breasts in the case of women. Use deodorants and anti bacteria bathing soaps. You can also use prickly heat powder before going to bed. If your condition does not improve see your doctor.
2. Bad Breath(Mouth Odour)
Bad breath can be caused as a result of takingf too many medications(dry mouth)like those used for treating high blood pressure, depression and allergies. Smoking, eating high quantities of garlic and onions, gum diseases. Poor dental hygiene.
Self help treatment: You can eat saliva inducing fruits like apples, oranges and pineapples. Drink more water. Use toothpaste that does not contain sodium sulfate.Brush and floss. You may see your doctor if the condition remain unchanged.
3. Anal Itching
Many health workers consider anal itching as the most embarrassing health problem. The likely cause of anal itching are; Poor wiping especially with seniors; rectal warts; Prolapsed rectum, psoriasis or dyes; Pinworms in contaminated foods and other chemical agents in toilet papers.
Self help treatment: Use diaper rash ointment or anti-fungal powders. You can also use cool and soft baby wipes. Use them at bedtime. Donot use a cloth to scratch your bottom. See your doctor if your conditionis unchanged after a period of time.
4. Vaginal Odour
Dr.Margaret Stearn pointed out that vaginal odour can be caused if the ph of your vagina is too high, which allows bacteria to multiply; Vaginal odour can be triggered by anything that make vaginal area less acidic such as menstrual blood, semen and douches; Sexually transmitted diseases (STD); Yeast infection and clamydia.
5. Keeping Vagina Dry for Genital Itching and Odour
Self help treatment: Do not wear pantyhose and douching; Wear cotton underwear and to be changed everyday; You can also use soft, perfumed sanitary pads; Test yourself at home to see if you have a yeast infection. See your doctor if you have yeast infection too often. Note that if you eat foods that contain garlic, asperagus and onions may cause vaginal odour.
6. Lack of sexual desire
Sex councellor, Susie Hayman has observed that lack of sexual desire can be caused due to psychological reasons such as stress or depression or physical reasons; It can also be due to taking of medications; Drinking to much alcohol. When blood alcohol concentration level reaches about 40mg/100ml, erection is inhibited and may cause erectile failure over time; High blood pressure is another possible cause.
Self help treatment: Try to reduce stress in your life. You can also ask your doctor for alternative drugs if if your medications are responsible; Reduce alcohol intake; Stop smoking; Regularly check your blood pressure and blood lipids (eg. cholesterol). Note that lack of sexual desire can also be a symptom of diabetes. See your doctor if your condition remain unchanged.
Snoring is a health problem which occurs while you sleep when muscles of the throat are relaxed causing air turbulence as you breath in; If you have a small jaw and narrow throat and a large uvala; If you drink alcohol or take sleeping pills; If you are overweight,particularly if you have a fat neck; If you breath through your mouth rather than your nose. We all snore when we have a cold; Smoking;If you sleep on your back; If you eat a large meal before bed; Snoring tend to run in families.
Self help treatment: Do not sleep on your back; reduce or stop alcohol intake; Stop smoking; Reduce your weight; Eat light meals before bed; Exercise regularly; You may also use a mouth guard when sleeping. You may see your doctor if the conditions persists.
Bed wetting in adults and teenagers can be caused by; lack of necessary muscle and nerve control;production of a lot of urine at night; If recently started, it may be caused by urine infection; alcohol, coffee, diuretic medicines; Sleeping tablets, diabetes; Stress and anxiety; expansion of prostate gland and sleep apnoea.
Self help treatment: Do not blame yourself. Cut down on alcohol; Use an alarm clock to intermittently wake you up at night to empty the bladder; Try sleeping on a different bed or moving to a different room or position. It is known to have worked for some people; Reduce stress and avoid taking sleeping pills when not necessary. Visit your doctor if there is no significant change.
